Overview
The course has been taught since 1995, De Montfort University’s Sports History and Culture MA will teach you all about the modern way of promoting sports, from the old way to current methods. This is a flexible and engaging curriculum with a focus on history and culture, owing to its close connections with the International Center for Sports History and Culture (ICSHC).
You will research the roots of contemporary sports, their impact on culture and society, and how historical scholars might use primary materials. You will study how contemporary sport evolved from its British beginnings, and also examine how it moved throughout the world to other nations that adopted their own cultural settings. Historians on the ICSHC staff also sit on editorial boards of prominent journals, help organise key conferences, and consult on a wide range of projects, including the award-winning BBC radio series, Sport and teh British.
Although you will study full-time or part-time online, you will also have the opportunity to join seminars and conferences such as the British Society of Sports History and the European Committee for Sports History that are organised by the ICSHC and partnering groups. Pairing these collaborations with De Montfort University’s academic teams’ ability to provide knowledge from the real world and their on-the-job experience will create an engaging and worthwhile intellectual challenge for you. You will have opportunities to collaborate with the larger research community by becoming a member of the ICSHC, as well as being encouraged to utilise social media.
